Types of Shooting Sports Competitions in the Olympics

Target Sports have a rich history. We’ve seen them in epics like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata and we’ve seen them evolve and grow. Shooting sports have come a long way! Shooting is a sport whose pillars include precision, focus and accuracy and was one of the 9 sports featured in the 1896 Olympics in Athens. Shooting is now governed by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF).

The Olympics have three specific categories for gun shooting events. Three different gun types are used in Olympic shooting: shotgun, pistol, and rifle. These form the three main disciplines of gun shooting sports in the Olympics. During rifle and pistol shooting events, the athletes shoot at stationary targets in indoor shooting ranges. Shotgun events on the other hand are conducted outside where targets are thrown in the air and shooters must shoot their way to victory. A bullseye on a paper target or flying “clays” in the shotgun is done from a set and precise distance of 10 m, 25 m, or 50 m in the shotgun events.

Even though a shooter is in one place, the sport imposes intense demands on the athlete’s mental and physical abilities. The shotgun used during this competition is a 12 gauge one with a calibre of 18.5-millimetres. The rifle has a 5.6-millimetre calibre and is a single-load rifle. In the 10m Air Pistol event, the pistol used has a 4.5-millimetre calibre, single loaded and the one used in the 25m event is a rapid-fire pistol having a 5-shot magazine with a 5.6 calibre.

There are 5 events in each discipline resulting in a total of 15 events and each has its own rules for qualifications. There are six men, six women events and three mixed team events.

When it comes to equipment and gear, athletes wear special coats/jackets that offer them stability while they perform. The surface of these jackets is non-slippery to make sure the athletes have a better grip. The jackets have extra padding that helps shooters improve their aim, especially for rifle shooters when they take the prone position. Blinders are another important part of a shooter’s gear. They help minimise distractions resulting in improved focus. No one can deny how gripping it is to watch the Olympics. For an athlete, it is one of the highest honours to be able to represent their country and compete for a medal.
